Customs and Manners Class

    Tuesday, April 24, 2007, 4:53 AM [General]

If you have not heard it from Sardonyx, you'll hear it from me! :D

Scarborough Cast is offering a workshop to be held during faire. If you could make it, I'm sure you will be well received.

They will be going over proper greetings, names, and manners. The thing that makes this useful is that we will be in the setting where we can physically SEE the actual character that owns the title. There will be none of this "She's the lady with the really long red hair. She's thin... she wears a blue dress most of the time." They will point to a physical person and say, "This is the Arch Dutchess. Isn't she spiff? We call her ‘Your Grace.' When you see her, remember to bow ‘cause she's really important, and she really appreciates it when you remember to do that....."

I know I've blogged about the importance of endowment and how it is the very heart of everything we do at every faire. If ever there were a class that would empower you to empower cast, this would be it.

    Please attend.

If you were one of those kids in school who had to have hands-on teaching in order to learn an idea, this is your big chance! Personally, I need to take this class more than once because they pack so much information in it that I cannot retain it all.

Please make room for this event. It is so important, they are actually offering it on Saturday, and then again on Sunday.

Please attend with me the Renaissance Customs and Manners Class.

It will be held this weekend, at 11:30 on Saturday and Sunday at Hightower Square (the Front Gate).

Byron T Bear \ Best Undiscovered Lane Act - 2007

    Monday, March 26, 2007, 3:42 AM [General]

I spent the better part of my day trying to understand the enormous impact of this lane act that I have seen at Scarlet's and Four Winds. When I see that a faire has this lane act, I will drop EVERYTHING to run over and see Byron!

This is "Byron T Bear." It's a lane act of a guy dressed as a bear. He's as tall as a bear. He moves just like a bear. He acts just like a bear would behave it he were friendly, thoughtful, sweet, and loved children in the I'm-a-friendly-bear kind of way. He also, dances, rolls over and does some very clever tricks. Byron remembers faces and can interact with cast members. It is not beyond him, to get on the ground to put himself onto the same level as a child.

His side job is to raise awareness of the issues involving the Black Bear. For example, his costume is 100% man-made and designed to help the actor survive the heat while looking ultra-realistic.

Byron has a trainer that cautions children about not doing this with a bear in real life and teaches them useful things about the black bear.

He also makes for interesting pictures. Face it, you aren't going to get many pictures of you petting a realistic looking black bear!

And Byron appreciates any and all thoughtful behavior.

When I saw him, I made a bee-line to hug him. When he realized who I was, he was truly delighted to see me. More importantly, the actor was able to communicate that delight, as a bear would express it. (He rubbed his nose under my chin. It was soooo endearing!)

Byron T Bear has become my favorite Undiscovered Lane Act for the season so far! He is booked for months in advance, for obvious reasons!

If you have a chance to see this bear! Run; don't walk, to see him!
